                                                   CURRICULUM VITATE ET STUDIORUM                                                          

Prof. F.S. Marzano received the Laurea degree (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering (1988) and the Ph.D. degree (1993) in Applied Electromagnetics both from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy. In 1992 he was a visiting scientist at Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. During 1993 he collaborated with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, National Council of Research (CNR), Rome, Italy. From 1994 till 1996, he was with the Italian Space Agency, Rome, Italy, as a post-doctorate researcher. After being a lecturer at the University of Perugia, Italy, in 1997 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of L’Aquila, Italy teaching courses on electromagnetic fields as Assistant Professor. In 1999 he was at Naval Research Laboratory, Monterey, CA, as a visiting scientist. In 2002 he got the qualification to Associate Professorship and has co-founded Center of Excellence on Remote Sensing and Hydro-Meteorological Modeling (CETEMPS) of the University of L’Aquila, becoming the coordinator of its Satellite and Radar Remote Sensing Laboratory. In 2005 he finally joined the Dept. of Electronic Engineering (now Dept. of Information engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications), Sapienza Univ. of Rome, Italy where he presently teaches courses on antennas, propagation and remote sensing. Since 2007 he is vice-director of CETEMPS of the University of L’Aquila, Italy.
His current research concerns passive and active remote sensing of the atmosphere from ground-based, airborne, and space-borne platforms, with a particular focus on clouds and precipitation using microwave and infrared data, development of inversion methods, radiative transfer modelling of absorbing and scattering media, radar meteorology for rain, wind and ash retrieval and synthetic aperture radar data processing for land-use applications. He is also deeply involved in electromagnetic propagation studies, including e.m. field scintillation and rain fading modelling and data analysis along satellite microwave and millimeter-wave links. Recently he has been dealing with radar-based retrieval of volcanic ash clouds and free-space optics from a modeling and experimental point of view.
Dr. Marzano has published more than 130 papers on refereed International Journals, more than 30 contributions to international Book chapters and more than 230 extended abstract on International and National Congress Proceedings. He was the Editor, together with G. Visconti, of the book “Remote sensing of atmosphere and ocean from space: models, instruments and techniques”, Kluwer Acad.
Plub., Dordrecht (NL), 2002. He is a reviewer for the major international journals in remote sensing and radiopropagation (e.g., AGU Radio Sci., IEEE Trans. Geosci. Rem. Sens., IEE Ant. Propogat., AMS J. Appl. Meteor., AMS J. Atm. Science, AMS J. Ocean. Atm. Tech). Since January 2004 he has been acting as an Associated Editor of IEEE Geoscience Remote Sensing Letters. In 2005 and 2007 he has been Guest Co-Editor of the MicroRad04 and MicroRad06 Special Issues for IEEE Trans. Geosci. Rem. Sensing. Since January 2011 he is Associate Editor of the journal EGU Atmospheric Measurements Techniques.
Dr. Marzano has been teaching at the University of L’Aquila, University of Perugia and at the University La Sapienza”of Rome courses on Electromagnetic Fields, Antennas and Remote sensing of the Atmosphere. He has been tutor of more 60 undergraduate students, more than 45 graduate students and 12 Ph.D. students. He has been a member of the Doctorate in Electrical and Information Engineering of the University of L’Aquila and he is currently member of the Doctorate in Electronic Eng. and Remote Sensing and associated to the Doctorate Applied Electromagnetics of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, the Doctorate in Environmenal monitoring of the University of Basilicata. In 2000 Dr. Marzano was the director of the first edition of the International Summer School on Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ISSAOS), held in L’Aquila. In 2004 he has been appointed Co-Director of the Fourth Hydro-meteorological Radar School held during the 6th EGS Plinius Conference. Dr. Marzano has been a lecturer on remote sensing techniques and wave propagation in several National and International Conferences and Schools.

Since 1991 Dr. Marzano has been participating to several international research projects (e.g., GPCP-AIP-2, GPCP-AIP3, NASA-PIP2, NASA-PIP3, EU-COST-712, EU-COST-255), European-Union funded projects (e.g., STORM within 3th EU-FP, MEFFE within 3th EU-FP, EuroTRMM within 4th EU-FP, EuRAINSAT within 5th EU-FP, RiskAWARE within INTERREG III-B CADSES, HYDRORAD within FP7, HYDREX within FP7, ADRIARadNet within IPA), and ESA-funded research studies related to meteorological satellite missions (e.g., DMSP, TRMM, ENVISAT, MSG). He is involved within the ENVISAT calibration team, the science team of the satellite missions I-GPM and E-GPM and Co-PI within Italian Space Agency (ASI), Italian National Research Council (CNR) and EUMETSAT research projects. In 2009 he coordinated the activities for the small-mission proposal FloRad for the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI).
Since 2001 till 2005 he has been acting as the Italian national delegate for European COST Actions n. 720 on “Integrated ground-based remote sensing stations for Atmospheric profiling” and n. 280 on “Propagation impairment mitigation for millimeter wave radio systems”. In 2002 he contributed to the planning and design of the new national radar network within a project of the Italian Dept. of Civil Protection and since then he is a member of Italian Technical Committee on Radar Network. He has been also a consultant of national engineering companies and international agencies, involved in microwave engineering and remote sensing systems. In 2008 he has been nominated national delegate by Ministero Università e Ricerca (MIUR) for the European COST Action IC0802 named “Propagation tools and data for integrated Telecommunication, Navigation and Earth Observation systems" and for the European COST ES0702 named EG-CLIMET “European Ground Based observations of essential variables for climate and operational meteorology”. He has been national vice-delegate of the European COST action IC1101 OPTICWISE “Optical wireless communications” since 2012. In 2009 he became member of the Science team of the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) in 2012 he has been nominated member of the EuMetSat Precipitation Science Advisory Group (P-SAG) and
MWI-ICI Science Advisory Group (SAG).
Dr. Marzano was the recipient of a fellowship award from Elettronica S.p.A. (Rome, Italy) for researches on microwave radiometry in 1990. In 1993 he received the Young Scientist Award of XXIV General Assembly of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), in 2008 the “Best Paper Award” from the EGU-Plinius Conference (Nicosia, Cyprus) e and the Best Paper Award from congress EuCap09 in Berlino. In 1998 he was the recipient of the Alan Berman Publication Award (ARPAD) from the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, Fellow of the RMetS (UK) and a member of the Italian Society of Electromagnetism (SIEm). Since July 2005 he is Secretary and Vice-president of the IEEE-GRS Chapter n.21 of South-Central Italy.
